ACS/CAC Board of Directors
Douglas R. Dean is an Interactive Multimedia Designer who currently holds the position of Senior Graphic Designer at XAP Corporation, the leading provider of online college admissions processing and student information management systems in the United States. He's one of the founding developers of XAP Corporation.
Doug has been a member of the Celtic Arts Center since 1999. He is a member of An Cór Ceilteach/The Celtic Arts Center's choir and is currently studying Irish and Scots-Gaelic along with many other aspects of Celtic culture. Doug has been a Board member since 2000, served as Vice President through 2002-3 (ascended to President after the resignation of the sitting President in Spring 2003), and served as President of the Board from 2004 to 2006. He then served as Secretary of the Board from 2006 to 2010. This year Doug will return to the role of President of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Dean holds a B. A. in Fine Arts with an Industrial Design emphasis from California State University, Northridge. He also has a minor degree in Native American Studies from their Cultural Anthropology department.
Larry Malley is a software engineer and a screenwriter.
Larry holds a Ph. D. in Communications Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Larry has been a member of the Celtic Arts Center since 2008. He is currently a member of the Center's Theatre Committee and is participating in the Irish céilí dance workshops. Larry was elected to Board of Directors in September and was selected to be the Vice President by the Board for 2010-11.
Alaina Smith is a preschool director with an extensive background in Early Childhood Education.
She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and has served (in the past) on their local chapter board as Vice-president of Programs and is currently a committee member of the programs committee of that board. (SCV AEYC - Southern California Valley Association for the Education of Young Children).
Ms. Smith has been a member of the Celtic Arts Center since 2002 and Board member since 2004. She was re-elected to Board by our members in the last election and was selected to be the Treasurer for 2008-9.
She received a Bachelor's degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College and is currently working on a thesis for a Masters degree in Human Development with a specialty in Early Childhood Education.
Shannon is a recent graduate of Cal State Fullerton where she received a BS in Child & Adolescent Development. Her main area of Celtic interest lies in the pursuit of Irish studies, particularly conflict resolution studies involving Northern Ireland. She has spent time studying Ireland.
Shannon began at the Celtic Arts Center by participating in the Irish Gaelic language and céilí dance classes in 2008. Over the last year and a half she has been teaching the Monday night dance workshops. She joined to the Board of Directors in 2009 and this year will serve as Secretary. Shannon also serves as the Center's Dance Department director (as of November 2010).
Howard Chu is a programmer and a professional fiddle player. (More biographical information will be coming soon)
Howard Chu is a long-time member of the Celtic Arts Center and was appointed to the Board of Directors in October of 2010. (A more detailed history of his participation will be forthcoming.)
Virginia Morris is an actress and theatrical director. Her most recent work was on the hit series "Lost", as well as many other performances on stage, in films, and on TV. In 1997, she was nominated for an ADA award as best actress for her work in the role of Timothea in “Sea Marks”, an ACS/CAC production directed by Richard Scully. As a director, she won a Dramalogue Award for her direction of “Adam and Eva Marie” at the Actors Art Theatre in 1996. In 2000 she founded ShapeShifter Productions, for which she both directed and produced theatre with her husband, Jimmie F. Skaggs.
Virginia has been a member of the Celtic Arts Center since the early 90s. She joined the Center's Board of Directors for the first time in 2008. She was appointed the Theatre Department director in April of 2010 by the Board of Directors.
Virginia Morris is a Harvard graduate and has studied acting with both Sanford Meisner and Paul Sills. She has performed in theatres across the U.S. before moving to LA. She's a founding member of First Stage. She first appeared on the An Claideamh Soluis/Celtic Arts Center’s stage in the winter of 1992. In the winter of 2007, along side Brian oh-Eachtuigheirn and Richard Scully, she was the Artistic Director of ACS/Gaelic Adventure’s Performance Group, a fledgling ensemble of performers dedicated to promoting the restoration of the Irish language. She produced, co-directed and acted in their production of “Portrait Joyce” at Molly Malone’s pub. She is currently studying Irish in the beginner class under Mairse Meyer Sculatti.
Jeff is an electrical engineer and currently works in the Audio/Video Technologies Department at NBC/Universal Studios. He's an active member of the Audio Engineering Society and the Society of Television Engineers. He also is a member of the National Assoc. of Broadcasters, the Society of Broadcast Engineers, and the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers.
Jeff's career as an engineer started 32 years ago in the US Navy during which time he attended Northwestern University as well as many naval schools for engineering in both San Diego and Great Lakes Training Centers while serving our country through 3 deployments around the world. After the Navy, Jeff attended CSULB and UCLA earning a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Technical Business Management.
Jeff recently joined the Celtic Arts Center and is currently participating in the céilí dance classes. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors by the membership in 2010.
Nick Morgan is a commercial diver and welder.
Nick is a new member of the Celtic Arts Center, having joined in early 2010. He has been very active in the céilí dance workshops assisting in their instruction. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors by the membership in 2010.
