Calligraphy

What would you do with calligraphy? Design elegant invitations? Write a beautiful love letter? Conquer the world? Explore the possibilities of Celtic calligraphy and illumination with an emphasis on discovering the student's own style.

Teacher - Adrien Rain Burke has been part of the Celtic Arts Center since 1986. Her illustrations have appeared in Fantasy Book, Whispers, and The Encyclopedia of Tarot, among other publications.


History of the Celtic Nations

A survey of the development of the Celtic nations:  Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man.  The class will start with the earliest roots of Celtic language and culture and proceed through the development of the nations' identities and their struggles to achieve and maintain independence.

Teacher - Todd Covert is the General Manager of the C. G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and a longtime member and former President of the Celtic Arts Center (1999-2000).  He currently serves as Administrator of Ár nDraíocht Féin, a Celtic spiritual organization, as well as a member of the Celtic League-American Branch.


Irish Céilí Dance Instruction

The class will teach both the simple party dances such as Walls of Limerick, Haymaker's Jig, Fairy Reel etc., and the more advanced dances like Eight-Hand Jig, High Cauled Cap. Emphasis will be placed on learning proper form and footwork throughout the course.

Introduction to Highland Dance

A class for beginners, students will learn basic arm and foot positions, and the many steps needed for these dances. Students will establish a strong basis in Highland dance.

Teacher - Shelley Montgomery Puente has been a Highland Dancer since 1983 and advanced to Premier dancer winning at many of the California Highland Dance Competitions. She is the Director and Choreographer of Everything Celtic Dance and Music Troop, which got its beginning in 1996. Shelley is also Dance Director of The Celtic Arts Center.

Irish Gaelic 101

This is a beginner's class designed for those who have no experience with Irish as well as those who know a little. The course will cover the basics such as pronounciation, spelling, and beginning vocabulary.

Teacher - Marta Collier is the poster child of the Celtic Arts Center. Arriving some years ago with the drive of Queen Boudiccae herself and a thirst for knowledge, she was soon teaching dance, playing in a Celtic band, and studying and speaking Irish. She has been a longtime Irish teacher at the Center.


Sacred Sites of the British Isles

Come and share the experiences, photos, videos, and stories of Howard and Jennifer about many of the sacred sites and power places of Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, Wales, and England. Learn how "the Moon walks on the Earth" at Callanish; step inside the passage grave New Grange; see the Avebury stone circle — so large that a village grew within it; peer through the Men-an-Tol, "the hole in the stone"; touch a rock from Caermeini, the source of the sacred bluestones of Stonehenge.

Teachers - Howard Hansen teaches Celtic mysteries and astrological vision quests, and has travelled extensively all over the British Isles visiting these mystical henges and dolmens. Jennifer Michaud is a clergy member of the Ancient Keltic Church and an ADF member, former Board member of the Celtic Arts Center. She invites you to share her experiences exploring the magic and wonder of the ancient standing stones.


Scottish Country Dance

Come and learn the "ballroom dance" of Scotland, from lively reels and jigs to slow, elegant Strathspeys.

Scottish Country Dancing is a very social dance form with numerous opportunities to dance throughout the year, from casual social dances to formal balls.

Songs of the Hearth

Another great class with singer Ken O'Malley where students will learn and perform songs of the far-flung Irish rover; songs of loss and longing for the for the fair shores of the Ireland.

Teacher - Ken O'Malley is originally from Dublin and has been a professional singer and musician for over twenty-five years. He is well known in Los Angeles as a recording artist and an exciting stage performer.
