Irish Dance & Drama Workshop

10 Sessions (Introductory Class on Dec. 16, 2003 for $5)
Tuesday Nights - Starting January 6, 2004
7:00PM - 8:30PM
Tuition: $12.00/class or $100 total
(Students who attended the $5 Introductory Class, now only pay $95 for the classes)

PRE-REGISTRATION STRONGLY ADVISED

Maire Clerkin, director, choreographer and Irish dance teacher/adjudicant will be running Irish Dance Drama sessions for teens and adults at the Celtic Arts Center. This ten-week course will lead to a special performance for St. Patrick's Day.

CLASSES WILL BE:
Fun, educational, challenging, unpredictable, dynamic, and stimulating – a chance to learn new skills and share existing ones.

CLASSES WILL NOT BE:
Competitive, purely traditional, something to do between drinks, or an audition exercise for Riverdance.

EXPECT:
• An original approach to text, acting methods, rhythm and lively physical stuff.
• The opportunity to explore and interpret Irish history, stories, myths, poems and songs through dance and drama.

Teacher - Mary Clerkin has recently relocated to LA from London where she was artistic director of her own companies: The Hairy Marys, Clerkinworks, and KICK Irish Dance Theater. She is a certified teacher and adjudicator but does not wear a curly wig, nor should you.

Irish Céilí Dance Instruction

The class will teach both the simple party dances such as Walls of Limerick, Haymaker's Jig, Fairy Reel, as well as the more advanced dances like Eight-Hand Jig and High Cauled Cap. Emphasis will be placed on learning proper form and footwork throughout the course.

Introduction to Highland Dance

A class for beginners, students will learn basic arm and foot positions, and the many steps needed for these dances. Students will establish a strong foundation in Highland dance.

Teacher - Shelley Montgomery Puente has been a Highland Dancer since 1983 and advanced to Premier dancer winning at many of the California Highland Dance Competitions. She is the Director and Choreographer of Everything Celtic dance and music troop, which got its beginning in 1996. Shelley is also Director of Dance at the Celtic Arts Center.

Highland Dance - Advanced

Come and learn the "ballroom dance" of Scotland, from lively reels and jigs to slow, elegant Strathspeys.

Scottish Country Dancing is a very social dance form with numerous opportunities to dance throughout the year, from casual social dances to formal balls.
