Irish Step Dancing

Thursday Nights – 5 weeks
Oct. 13, 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10th
7PM - 8:30PM
(Free introductory class 6:15-6:45PM on Oct. 13th)
Tuition: $70

Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels

Structure: A mixed level class, it is open to everyone, including beginners. Each session begins with a general physical warm up - it is vital that you arrive on time to prevent injury or strain.

Maire will teach light and heavy dances (also known as soft and hard shoe) such as the Reel, Traditional Hornpipe, Light and Heavy Jig, and will alternate between the beginner-elementary level and the intermediate-advanced group. This will give students a chance to practice what they have learned or to take a short rest.

Technique is taught as you go along. Irish Dancing increases fitness; helps with ankle, knee and hip flexibility; improves balance; strengthens muscles; corrects posture; and is an enjoyable way to discover Irish music and cultural traditions. Máire Clerkin does not teach students for competition. Strictly for fun. If you have never tried it before, there will be an introductory 30 minute session at 6.15pm FREE to give you some idea if this is for you.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing; preferably not jeans. Use tennis shoes, jazz shoes and/or Irish dancing shoes. Tap shoes are OK for hard shoe dancing. Irish Dancing is aerobic, so drink plenty of water and be prepared to sweat. No alcohol please!

Students go at their own pace but will be expected to accomplish at least one complete dance if you are a beginner, and two if you have experience. The Thursday after the last class (Nov 17), you are invited (but not forced!) to put in a guest appearance and do a step or two at Maeve's Residuals Pub in Studio City, where there is a traditional Irish seisiun (music session) every week. (Indeed you are encouraged to go there before that and listen to live Irish music so that you can connect it with your steps and with the recorded music in class.)

Teacher - Máire Clerkin has recently relocated to LA from London where she was artistic director of her own companies: The Hairy Marys, Clerkinworks, and KICK Irish Dance Theater. She is a certified teacher and adjudicator with An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha, but does not wear a curly wig, nor should you.

Get more information or reserve your space by calling 310-801-5520 or e-mailing Maire at maireclerkin@yahoo.co.uk.

Introduction to Sean Nós Singing
(Solo acapella Gaelic singing)

Tuesday Nights – 5 weeks
October 11th to Nov. 8th, 2005
8:30PM - 9:45PM
Tuition: $130

Background: You’ve heard of “Old-Timey” music. Now it’s time to open yourself to the Irish version. Some people reckon this is the oldest Irish music there is, and that it connects to the days when poets praised chiefs for their generosity and magnanimity to harp accompaniment.

The harps are long gone, but what remains is something special, according to one authority, “the key that opens every lock” in understanding the dynamics of Irish traditional music. This vocal music, now called sean-nós (shan-noes) or "old-style" singing, an acapella, solo form, is found in small communities all over Ireland and especially in the Gaelic-speaking areas of the northwest, west and south. Recently, it has moved into the cities and some of the best younger practitioners are originally from Dublin!

Structure: This short course gives a unique opportunity to learn some songs from recordings of outstanding practitioners. It is organized as a kind of virtual tour in which students will learn 5 songs from different regions where sean-nós singing is a living part of vernacular culture. We will “visit” An Rinn (Ring) in Co. Waterford, Carna (Galway), regarding as the epicenter of this hidden art, and finally Dún na nGall Donegal, in the northwest, perhaps better known for its supergroups than for its sean-nós.

Who is it for? This course is ideally aimed at those who have some knowledge of the Irish language already, although not having studied the language will not an absolute barrier. What you need are a pen and paper for note-taking, a reasonable attention span and a love of singing. A tape recorder is a good idea too! Students will be provided with a CD containing the songs and a booklet with the words on the first night, and this will function as the class text.

Teacher - Lillis Ó Laoire: Originally from Gortahork, Co. Donegal, he has been involved in sean-nós singing for over 20 years, performing, broadcasting and teaching from the University of Limerick, to Milwaukee Irishfest among other places. He has written an award-winning study of the singing practices of Tory Island, Co. Donegal in Irish, a book that will be published in English this Fall. He has also recorded a solo album and has won Corn Uí Riada, the O’Riada Cup and gold medal for sean-nós singing twice, in 1991 and 1994.

Class space very limited. Reserve a place today by calling 818-760-8322.

Morris Dance Workshop

Wednesday Nights
ATTENTION: There will be no workshop October 12th, 2005
7:00PM - 8:30PM
Tuition: $10/class
Continuous enrollment

Some of the dances cannot be taught without a minimum number of people. Curriculum will be tailored to the number of participants.

Aedan MacDonnell, director of Beggar's Riddle (seen dancing the past few years at the City of Glendale's Unity Fest festival), will be teaching the basics of various styles of Morris Dance at the Celtic Arts Center. This is a continuation of her very successful introductory workshop but the classes are open to new students too.

What is Morris?
An ancient form of dance from many regions of the British Isle, celebrating seasonal rituals using simple steps and patterns, which are still danced to this day in a variety of settings.

What will I learn?
In these classes you'll learn traditional dances from Wales, the Shetland Islands, and the Cotswolds in England, using hankies, sticks, and swords. We'll have live music, and friends/special guests dropping in to help out.

Who can attend?
It doesn't matter if you've had years of Irish, Scottish, or ballet dance, or no dance at all... Morris is an equal-opportunity corrupter.

What do I wear?
This is a fairly aerobic dance form, so wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes (high-top tennies work great!).

Teacher - Aedan MacDonnell is the director of the L.A. -based Morris dance troop Beggar's Riddle. In addition, Aedan is also an accomplished Celtic/folk harpist.
