Each week the class will explore a major tale from each of the cycles of Irish mythology:

THE MYTHOLOGICAL CYCLE
The Second Battle of Moytura, in which the Tuatha De Danann (the ancient gods and goddesses of Ireland) battle against the monstrous Fomorians from beneath the sea.

THE ULSTER CYCLE
The exploits of the great warrior Cuchullain in the national epic poem of Ireland, the Tain Bo Cuailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley).

THE FENIAN CYCLE
The adventures of the most widely-known Irish hero Fionn MacCumhal and his band of fellow warrior-poets known as the Fianna, in the fairy Otherworld of the Sídhe.

IRISH FOLKLORE
The beloved folk and fairy tales of Ireland about leprechauns, changelings, banshees and ghosts, in a world where the ordinary and the magical live side by side.

This one and a half hour class will introduce students to Irish song and music, tracing the roots of Irish music from the 12th Century, its suppression following the Tudor invasion and its preservation underground through oral tradition. It will then explore Irish music's renaissance in the 20th Century and the breathtaking development of the years 1960-1985 through works of artists such as Seán O Ríada, Donal Lunny, Clannad, Kila, and Nuala Ni Dhomnhaill's poetry collaborations with songwriters. The course then ends with new fusion genres — such as the Celtic folk-punk played by the Pogues, and O'Reilly's own Gaelic jazz interpretations.
