Celtic Rhythms: A Fitness Dance Series Designed To The Celtic Beat
We are very excited to present a fun new series of dance and exercise classes based on different Celtic dance styles. Dance has proven to be one of the best ways to build stamina and strength.
Series 4: Longsword Dance Workshop (3 Week Class)
Monday Evenings
9PM - 10PM — November 26th, December 3rd & 10th, 2012
in the theatre space at T.U. Studios in North Hollywood
If you came to the Samhain show you will remember the exciting dance performed with long metal swords. In this workshop you will learn that dance, or as much as possible within the three week course. For safety we will be using wooden swords, rather than the heavy metal swords.
If you missed Samhain, here's a brief description:
5-8 people, each holding the hilt of a 36" sword in one hand, and the tip of their neighbor's sword in the other, form a ring. Without breaking the ring, dancers weave patterns by jumping over and dancing under the swords. The dance ends with the swords being woven into a lock, this being the only time the ring is broken.
Attire: sturdy, comfortable shoes that fully cover your feet with a low heel, or no heel. No high heels, flip flops, sandals or gillies. Clothing should be comfortable and allow you to move freely.
This style of dance is centuries old and comes to us from the northern region England, as well as from the Shetland islands.
If there is enough interest, the course will be resumed after the first of the year. Hope to see you there!
