Summer 2016 - Classes, Seminars, and Workshops
If you wish to become a member to get the discount class rate, you can join online or download and fill out a membership application, and we will process your membership application at the first class. Tuition for classes and workshops must be paid either through cash or personal check at the start of class.

Some of these classes will not be held unless a minimum number of registered students is reached.





Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) Language Class
** For Beginners & Intermediates**

Tuition: $5/meeting for non-members
but FREE for ACS/CAC members!

Emphasis is on pronunciation, conversation and reading.  In the first part of each class, we usually review very basic material, and in the second hour, we work at a more advanced level, for continuing study group members. (Beginners are welcome to stay, of course.)

The textbook is Teach Yourself Gaelic by Boyd Robertson and Iain Taylor (readily available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, or Amazon).  Students are advised to purchase the complete "Teach Yourself Gaelic" course which includes the book as well as a CD/tape invaluable for ongoing listening practice.  We will also include some Gaelic songs and practical conversation (Gaelic tea & biscuits, etc.).

Teacher - Eva Gordon has been studying Scottish Gaelic in books, online and via human interaction for the past 16 years.  She has attended a number of workshops sponsored by ACGA (An Comunn Gàidhealach America/Gaelic Society of America) at Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, and at the Gaelic College, St. Ann’s, Cape Breton, N. S. A member of ACGA , she was the winner of ACGA's Distance Mòd Prose Competition (advanced) in 2002, ACGA’s Advanced Gaelic Scholarship, 2005, and winner of the Great Lakes Gaelic Mòd 2005.  An active member of The Celtic Arts Center, she sings in the An Cór Ceilteach, the Center's choir.

4-Week Intro to Scottish Country Dancing Class
with Ann McBride

The Celtic Arts Center presents a limited time, four week session of Scottish Country Dancing taught by Ann McBride, certified instructor by the Royal Scottish Country Society. Join us as we learn basic steps and figures and some of the more popular dances.

You will learn the following:

  • Basic Steps — including skip change, pas-de-Basque, Strathspey traveling and setting, basic Highland setting steps
  • Basic Figures — including Allemande, wheels, Poussette, promenade, reels for 3, 4 or more couples
  • Country dances requiring varying levels of skills, including Mairi's Wedding, Petronella, Monymusk, The Wild Geese, Buchan Eightsome, Irish Rover, etc.
Join us at 7:00PM beginning on August 8th and then stay for the Irish céilí dance class at 8:00PM.

Instructor - Ann McBride was born in Whitehead, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She received her teaching certificate from the Royal Scottish Country Society in 1975 and has been teaching classes and workshops in the area ever since. Ann has also worked extensively with the LA Scottish Country Dancing Demonstration Team.

Celtic Calligraphy – Illumination Class
with Adrien Burke

Tuition: $30 for non-members; $20 for ACS/CAC members.

On the heels of our successful Celtic Calligraphy class, the Center is pleased to offer a class in Celtic-inspired manuscript illumination beginning August 15. From the Book of Kells to the present day's Celtic writing on public signage in Ireland and other places, Celtic design remains a beautiful and artistic feature of Celtic identity and culture.

The object of this six-session class will be to produce a piece of art which can be used for home decoration, correspondence, gifts or any other purpose. Those who missed the previous Calligraphy class can receive instruction in calligraphy as well!

The class will be held Monday nights in the Green Room (far side of the stage) from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. (Please note that Monday Sept. 5, Labor Day, we won't be meeting.)

Teacher -This class will be taught by Adrien Rain Burke, a noted graphic artist and longtime friend and leader of the Celtic Arts Center who uses Celtic themes and designs in her work. Click here for samples of her work

4-Week Intro to Irish Hard Shoe Dance Class
with Maire Clerkin

Tuition: $10/class for non-members; $5/class for ACS/CAC members

Learn to dance a treble jig, treble reel and hornpipe! Increase your dance repertoire! Improve your technique! Heavy jig shoes, tap shoes and/or dance sneakers are fine if you have them. If not, please wear shoes that can make a noise, such as ones with leather soles. TENNIS SHOES ARE NOT GOOD for this class.

Pay for the entire series on or before the first class, you only pay for three classes and get the fourth FREE! Bring cash or checks with you on Monday, September 5th at 7:00 pm.

Normally this type of instruction would cost you $15 per week, so this is a great value! Join us at 7:00PM beginning on September 5th and then stay for the céilí dance class at 8:00PM.

Instructor - Máire Clerkin is an adjudicator with the Irish Dancing Commission, Dublin, and a member of the Irish Dancing Teachers of North America. A dancer-choreographer from London, Máire's teaching credits include University of Limerick, Loyola Marymount University, Santa Monica College, and California Dance Educators.
